Fall 2019 Artistic Support Conference Schedule

Join your fellow Art Docents from schools throughout the Issaquah School District to learn from master artists about ways to lead educational, fun and interactive art lessons with elementary students. 

Lunch is a buffet style “create your own salad” made by Liberty High Schools’ student Café.  It is available for $15.  Your order provides you a wonderful lunch and opportunity for students to participate in a culinary arts program at Liberty High School.  You can order this through the link provided.  Lunch will be available for purchase until October 15th, 2019.

Kiln Training

 

Andrew – Clay Arts Center Tacoma (Skutt rep.)

 

Andrew will teach you how to run and program your Skutt kiln for either clay or glass. This class is intended for those of you who are pushing the buttons on the kiln at your school.

Clay Slab Projects

Beth Koontz

Slabs start as flat sheets of clay, but they don’t have to stay that way.  Beth will show you multiple ways to add dimension and create form when building with slabs.  

Needle Felted Germs

Elizabeth Jackson

Students will learn about the shapes of germs/bacteria and how to needle felt with sheep’s wool to create and name “germs” and mount on a petri dish or microscope “slide.”

Lucha Libre Masks

Amaranta Ibarra-Sandys

Amaranta will immerse you in a short history of Lucha Libre as a sport/entertainment.  Your students will learn to identify geometric forms and utilize symmetry when creating a 3D mask.

Watercolor Techniques

Tanya Hansen

Using masking, resists, chemistry and multiple application techniques to create visual texture with water colors.

Metal Embossing Sugar Skulls

Laurelle Graves

Learn the versatility of metal embossing by creating incredibly dimensional metal embossed sugar skulls.  Teach your students how to emboss and deboss the metal by working on both sides to create real depth and detail.  This project can easily be adapted by all grade levels.  We will also cover new and exciting ways to alter the color and texture of metal and add finishing details to truly make their projects shine!

Allowing for Creativity to Grow and Flow

Merideth MacKeigan

Merideth is a parent, art docent and creativity expert. She will work with you to come up with new ways to engage your students that will allow their creativity to take root and grow.

How can you fire students work once, saving you firing time and giving students a new experience for finishing ceramic work? Use cold finishes.  Beth will show you how to finish ceramic projects without glazes.

Crazy Creatures using only a pound of clay

Beth will show you how to create a pinch pot then transform it into a creature from a child's imagination. She will demonstrate how to work with your students to attach clay together to create simple forms using a single pound of clay.

Wet Felted Landscapes

Create landscapes with your students using wool roving and soapy water.  This is the cleanest project you will do all year!

Sugar Skull Printmaking

Amaranta Ibarra-Sandys

  Participants will create a series of prints (3) of Sugar Skulls designs using foam and ink to celebrate the legacy of Jose Guadalupe Posadas, one of the greatest Mexican printmakers of the 30's.

     

Stop, Listen & Paint your Emotions

Gail Baker

Learn processes from a master instructor to help your students paint what they feel. Create a background with paint and then draw a simple portrait which reflects your emotions.  

Keith Haring Printmaking

Laurelle Graves

ome learn how to make a social statement with your students through printmaking.  We will study the artwork by Keith Haring.  Students will then create their own poster that quickly coveys a positive social message. 

   

Tree of Life

Create a tree of life collage from warm and cool watercolor pages.

  

 Glass Fusing

Shelly Vollstede

Shelly will work with you to create a small fused glass piece so that you can learn the basics about this beautiful material.

Save Your Clay

Stop throwing away your scrap clay! With a few easy steps and a little work, you can turn those scraps into beautiful student projects and stretch your budgets. We will be using Re-hydrated clay to create a Flower Bowl using scrap clay and simple construction techniques.
