Healthy Youth Initiative

Creating a positive culture for youth by connection community resources that empower all to thrive.

The Healthy Youth Initiative has four core focus areas:

  • Substance Abuse Prevention
    • ​​The mission of the Influence the Choice - Drug Prevention Alliance for Youth is the prevention and reduction of youth substance abuse within the Issaquah School District service area.  The Coalition accomplishes this mission through community resource networking and strategic action planning aimed at changing community norms.
  • Mental Health Support
    • The B.E.S.T. (Building Emotional Strength Together) committee is dedicated to preventing youth suicde by developing a positive understanding for mental resilience.
    • This committee works on the annual State of Mind conferences featuring speakers and workshops focused on mental health and substance abuse challenges facing our community youth.
  • Basic Student Needs
    • The Basic Student Needs Committee works to lower barriers to academic success for financially challenged students by helping with many projects including:
      • ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences) training
      • Breakfast bar program for all schools
      • Clothing closets for middle and high schools.
      • Community Resource Guide
      • Lunch for the Break - Support the Issaquah Food and Clothing Bank program for students in need.
      • PowerPacks - support the PTSA Council and Issaquah Food and Clothing Bank project which provides students in need with Friday backpacks filled with food for the weekend.
      • Tools4School, a community-wide partnership led by the Issaquah Schools Foundation to provide new backpacks and school supplies for students in the Issaquah School District.  Our goal is for all students to be geared for success from day one.
  • Community Assessments
    • The Community Assessment Committee conducts research to ensure that the Healthy Youth Initiative is addressing appropriate needs within the school district and community by:
      • ​Promoting participation in Healthy Youth Survey and raising awareness about Issaquah's Healthy Youth Survey results
      • Promoting awareness of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) research, and advocating the adoption of "trauma-informed" practices within the school district and community
      • Participating in and analyzing the result of an on-going Community Resources and Needs Assessment that identifies emerging trends amoung community youth
      • Ensuring that Healthy Youth Initiative activities are based in proven research and recent data
