Youth Mental Health First Aid - Recap!

On May 7, The Issaquah Schools Foundation offered ISD teachers and staff free access to Youth Mental Health First Aid®.

The Issaquah Schools Foundation is providing free access to Youth Mental Health First Aid® training for all ISD staff.  Because 1 in 5 youth will experience a mental health challenge, it is crucial that adults know how to identify, understand, and respond to young people showing signs of mental health or substance use concerns. This program helps staff to build their knowledge around common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders and attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD).  It teaches them how to interact with an adolescent in crisis, and connect them with help.

While this information is routinely part of each counselors job, the course is helpful to give to all staff.  Like with a physical first aid class, the idea in mental health first aid is to know how to react, and what the next steps should be. The Foundation has been able to offer 2 sessions of Youth Mental Health First Aid this year and they have been very successful.  50 ISD staff have attended and they have all gained confidence in their ability to identify and take steps to support a student in a mental health crises.  76% of attendees feel significantly more confident!

Feedback from staff has been very positive. “Trainer was awesome.  Thoroughly enjoyed the training.” “Very valuable.”  “Thank you! Great Workshop!”

Thanks to support from donors like you, the Foundation is proud to provide this opportunity for district staff.
