Food Aid at Beaver Lake Middle School
During the 2017-18 school year, the Foundation supported the food aid program at Beaver Lake Middle School. Thanks to generous donations from the community, the Foundation funded free, healthy breakfasts for students in need. Students arriving hungry in the morning were provided with options including oatmeal, high-protein breakfast bars and breakfast sandwiches.
Almost immediately, teachers reported that students in the program were more alert and engaged. One teacher shared the following:
"Before this intervention, students who were not provided with a meal before school were lethargic, distracted and agitated in class. Some of our students would leave class in search of sustenance in the counseling office or from their peers in other classes. This created disruptions to the learning process.... Within a few days, teachers and paraprofessionals were sharing that students who were served by the program had become more engaged with their peers and were no longer leaving their classes."
"An unplanned benefit of the program was that, before the school day began, it was noted that the students in the program had formed better relationships with other students within the program and were demonstrating positive social interactions which was not evident before."
