January 2018 - Spotlight on Success
|
THANK YOU for your support of Feeding Student Success!
Before the holiday we launched a new initiative - Feeding Student Success - a program to combat hunger in our schools. Thanks to YOU, we have raised $6,000 towards our $22,000 goal to get the program off to a good start.
"Students experiencing hunger often have trouble behaving and focusing in class, and this shows itself particularly when students struggle to stay awake. Without their basic needs being met, even students who desperately want to succeed and learn have an insurmountable barrier. By providing assistance in meeting these needs, we are not only providing food, we are also opening the door to their ability to learn and grow." Sean Martin, Principal, Liberty High School
Haven't made a donation yet, there is still time.

Summer Slide: Just Say No - was a Classroom Enrichment Grant awarded last year to Maple Hills Elementary designed to help students maintain reading skills gained throughout the school year and prevent "Summer Slide" - academic loss over the summer break. Out of the 51 students who participated in the program and returned to school, 71% maintained or increased their reading level.
"Thank you so much for your kind gift that was used to purchase books for students in the Title I/LAP reading program. Students chose titles that interested them from a variety of choices at the school book fair. They were elated! This opportunity helped students maintain reading skills gained throughout the school year and prevented "Summer Slide"-academic loss over summer break.
With much gratitude for your support and generosity, "thank you for helping us LOVE to read!"

Nurse's Fund Breakfast - Check Presentation
The Issaquah Schools Foundation was honored to present the annual grant of $3,000 to the Nurse's Fund.
The Nurse's Fund are discretionary dollars that school nurses use to help students/families with social needs not covered by other funds.
School nurses are often the individuals who recognize the social need in their schools. This fund is used as individual student needs arise, filling the gaps to make sure all students succeed.

January is National Mentoring Month
January is National Mentoring Month and we're celebrating the real life impact mentoring has on our youth. A student who has a quality mentor is more likely to experience increased school attendance and academic achievement, demonstrates responsible decision-making, and develops skills to better navigate relationships at school, socially and at home.
So we say THANK YOU as we remind you of the important work you are doing in our community with the Foundation's VOICE mentor program.
